E- GOVERNANCE AND PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION IN NIGERIA

Abstract

Electronic governance entails the application of information and communication technologies
within the public sector to enhance governmental efficiency and governance quality. It is well
recognized as an efficient instrument for service delivery. The progression of information and
communication technology (ICT) has introduced a novel aspect to efficient global administration.
ICT is an essential political instrument designed to overcome traditional barriers of distance in the
administration of public affairs. The objective of this study is to offer insights into the diverse
perspectives, issues, and opportunities of e-governance and public administration in Nigeria. This
study utilizes secondary data sources, including journals, books, and publications, and applies
decision theory to e-government to integrate many theoretical and practical principles. The study
indicates that electronic governance could address the challenges of public administration,
particularly in public policy formulation and implementation. However, its optimal utilization
remains unachieved due to low literacy rates and the government’s failure to provide essential
infrastructure. The paper advocates for government at all levels to implement policies that promote
and expedite the use of ICT, as well as the training of government officials in e-governance to
enable sustainable growth in Nigeria.
